Where are you from/where did you grow up?
I am from New York City. I've lived in Brooklyn for over forty years and have spent most of that time in Park Slope.
How did you get into your art practice?
I grew up in a creative household, art was a part of family life and the “family business.” My parents, Donald Crews and Ann Jonas, have had very successful careers in children’s books. My formal studies included a BA in art from Yale University and participation in the Whitney Independent Study Program for studio artists.
How does your work connect to Brooklyn?
Many of my books are set in Brooklyn, but I feel my connection to this place goes beyond that. This is my community where friends and family motivate and support me creatively. Being in Brooklyn inspires me, I love the colors and textures found on city streets and parks. The children I have photographed are mostly local Brooklyn kids and reflect the diversity of the city.
