Where are you from/where did you grow up?

I grew up in Pittsburgh and New Jersey, then lived in Boston and London before settling into Brooklyn, where I've been ever since! I came here because there's truly no place like Brooklyn for meeting people from all walks of life, pursuing art, being inspired by the amazing innovation and community work people are doing -- while also never being too far from parks or other greenery!

Why did you start your business?

UpRoot Design Studio was created to inspire joyful sustainable living, and expand accessibility + participation for everyday people. Countering climate doomism and elite eco-asceticism, we purposely create colorful, easy-to-use decor, kits, and tools that help people take green action right in their own homes -- and feel good doing it!

How does your business connect to Brooklyn?

Climate change is impacting our world, but as urban dwellers with scant time and space, it can be hard to find ways to contribute to climate victory. UpRoot Design Studio provides Brooklynites with simple, enjoyable ways to live sustainably in connection with ourselves, each other, and our Earth. As a local small business, we also collaborate with local gift & plant shops, refilleries, and groceries to support a circular NYC economy.
