Where are you from/where did you grow up?

I am from Brooklyn New York. I grew up in Crown Heights and Bedstuy.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business for a few reasons. I loved everything about nail polish. As a little girl I always remember having nail polish in the house and painting my nails on a regular basis. As I grew older and was getting my nails done in the salon, the pungent smell started to give me a headache and I wondered what would be the reason for this. I started to do research and discovered that there were toxins in beauty products including nail polish. Thus started my journey to creating a nail polish that was free from these harmful toxins but still offered fun and vibrant colors for women to enjoy.

How does your work connect to Brooklyn?

My business connects to Brooklyn because of its name. Breukelen is the original spelling the land we know today as Brooklyn. When the Dutch arrived on this territory they named it Brooklyn which stands for Broken Land -after a town in the Netherlands. I wanted my brand to represent who I was which is a true Brooklyn Girl- born and raised. I went with the original spelling to provide some history behind the city that I cherish.
