Brooklyn Candle Studio by Tamara Mayne
Where are you from/where did you grow up?
I grew up in Northern Virginia, right outside of Washington, D.C. I've wanted to move to NYC since I was 14, inspired by stories of designers and creatives I'd read about in Vogue magazine. I moved to the city right after finishing college at UVA on a greyhound bus. The rest is history!
Why did you start your business?
I started it as a bit of an experiment and a fun project concepting and designing a line of candles, I thought best case scenario I'd make a little money on the side to fund my travel habit. I never imagined it would be where it is today.
How does your work connect to Brooklyn?
I started the candle business in Brooklyn, in the studio apartment I was living in with my now-husband. I was melting wax on the stove, wicking on the floor, every surface covered in candles. We have produced out of different studios in Brooklyn, mostly in Industry City ever since.
10 oz, milky glass vessel, double wick embossed box Burn time: Up to 70 hours Inspired by the smell of smoke in your hair the morning after a campfire, and dusty desert roads at night. Notes of clove and pine float above a heart of smoky incense and damp moss anchored by a woodsy, musky base of birch, amber, vanilla, santal, and cedar. We collaborated on this collection of beautiful glass candles with California-based artist, Allison Kunath, known for her minimalist aesthetic, ethereal geometric watercolors, graceful figurative abstractions, and awe-inspiring murals. Kunath drew each figure with one single unbroken line "capturing the essence of feminine grace, strength, and beauty."
