About the Historian
These rare images come from the archive of Brooklyn historian and author Brian Merlis, who has spent over 40 years collecting and preserving photographs that tell the story of life across Brooklyn’s neighborhoods. A lifelong Flatlands native and self-described “amateur historian,” Merlis has published more than a dozen books chronicling the borough’s history through images. His meticulous work brings forgotten streets and faces back into view — reminding us that every corner of Brooklyn has a story to tell.
